Gypsumville
Gypsumville is a small community in the Interlake Region of Manitoba, Canada, known for its history of gypsum mining. It is located on the north bank of Lake St. Martin, about 242 kilometers north-northwest of Winnipeg.
History
- Gypsum mining: Gypsum deposits were discovered in the area in 1888, and mining operations began in the 1890s. A post office named Gypsumville opened in 1905.
- Settlement: The community was initially established at the quarry site and was eventually moved in 1911 to the end of a new Canadian Northern Railway line.
- CFS Gypsumville: The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) operated a Pinetree Line radar station in the town from 1962 until 1987, when the Canadian Forces Station Gypsumville was closed. Technical equipment from the station is now displayed at the Moosehorn Heritage Museum.
- Pioneer monument: In 1994, a monument was erected by the Gypsumville Women's Institute and Community Club to commemorate local pioneers and veterans of the First and Second World Wars.
