Welcome to Camper, Manitoba
A quiet community in the heart of the Interlake.
Located within the Rural Municipality of Grahamdale, Camper is a small, unincorporated community that celebrates the peaceful, rural lifestyle. Nestled among the lakes and forests of Manitoba's Interlake region, Camper is a place where neighbours know one another and the pace of life is refreshingly slow. While it may not be a bustling hub, its quiet charm and natural beauty make it a truly special place to call home.
The natural setting
Life in Camper is defined by the land around it. The area is characterized by:
- Unique terrain: Flat, open fields and meadows give way to bush and forest, with the bedrock of the Interlake close to the surface.
- Abundant wildlife: The region is home to a diverse array of wildlife, providing a picturesque natural backdrop for residents.
- Outdoor opportunities: The greater RM of Grahamdale offers many natural attractions, including nearby Dog Lake and the geological marvel of the St. Martin impact crater.
Historical roots
The area around Camper was settled in the early 1900s, with a significant number of homesteaders, including many German families, putting down roots here. While the early days of settlement were challenging, the resilience of the community formed a strong foundation that continues to this day. A local history book for the area, called Beyond the Trails, recounts the lives of the early settlers and pioneers.
Community life
Though small, Camper has a tight-knit and welcoming community spirit. Without commercial services, residents rely on themselves and their neighbours, reinforcing a sense of togetherness. For essential services and to conduct municipal business, residents visit nearby communities such as Moosehorn and Gypsumville. The sense of community is a testament to the friendly, supportive nature of its people.
